Join the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology at ICON Day 2024.

ICON Day will promote excellence in teaching and learning through effective adoption and use of instructional technology at the University of Iowa. Attendees will hear from thought leaders, explore strategies to integrate technology, learn about campus resources, and interact with peers. During this event, we'll also recognize our 2024 ICON All Stars.

Our keynote speaker is Kate McDowell, an associate professor at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. McDowell is an expert in the art of storytelling, storytelling consulting for organizations, and teaching data storytelling. She will offer guidance for teaching data storytelling and promoting data literacy across a broad range of fields, from the humanities to the sciences. Data literacy is vital to making informed decisions and thriving in an increasingly complex digital era. Data literate educators can enhance their teaching and better understand students' needs by designing engaging and meaningful learning activities.

  • Enhancing Accessibility: Optimizing Your ICON Course Site. This workshop will help you make your ICON course site accessible to all your students. We will be focusing on how to improve some easy-to-fix potholes in site design, such as usage of headings, tables, color contrast, alternative text, and transcripts and captions so you can make sure any user can navigate and use your site with ease. By making these simple changes to your ICON site, you're making your course accessible for everyone!
  • Top Hat: Quick Steps to Increasing Engagement. Mike MacCourt, professor of practice in the Tippie College of Business, will join us to look at practical ways instructors can use Top Hat to build quick, meaningful engagement opportunities into their current courses.
